The rising cost and increase in compounded medications over the past several years has led to a concern for the safety and effectiveness of these medications. The newly formed Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has begun to provide guidance related to the oversight of drug compounding under sections 503A and 503B of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. This educational video will discuss why oversight of drug compounding is important, the shift from traditional compounding to compounding pharmacies, and utilization management strategies to consider as a payer.
